Student Organization Mentors Local Middle School Students, Builds Robotics Club
HENDERSON, Nev. (October 8, 2014) - ITT Technical Institute's student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in Henderson is participating in a new community service project in cooperation with the Clark County School District (CCSD).
Every Tuesday, ACM members are serving as mentors at Bob Miller Middle School in Henderson, Nev.. They are assisting children in grades 6-8 with forming and growing a robotics club. Mentors facilitate meetings, lead demonstrations and assist in the building and programming of Lego® Mindstorm Robots.
Several ITT Tech club members have been actively involved with the project, including Brandon Hammer, Evan Parker, Alvin Sedlmeyer, Edward Smith and Thomas Roth. Middle school participation continues to grow, with 40-60 children in attendance each week. Mentors have been thrilled with the positive response and interest children have shown. ITT Tech faculty advisors Rekha Subramanian and Edmund Montefusco expressed excitement about the contributions that their students are making to help grow STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) programming efforts in the local community.
The ACM student chapter, which received its charter in April 2014, has grown to include more than a dozen members from the schools of Information Technology and Electronics Technology. ACM, the world's largest educational and scientific computing society, delivers resources that advance computing as a science and a profession.
