ITT Tech is Hosting Coding Event at Durham Campus
Durham, N.C. (Aug. 10, 2015) - ITT Technical Institute is hosting a Black Girls CODE event on campus for girls ages 7 to 17 as part of an ongoing initiative with national and community partners to introduce students to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.
Founded in 2011, Black Girls CODE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to introducing girls of color from underrepresented communities to computer programming, through workshops and after school programs that teach basic programming skills.
All Black Girls CODE workshops are geared to introducing participants to the technological universe and encouraging them to pursue careers as tech creators and entrepreneurs. No prior computing experience is necessary and participants will have access to computers on the ITT Technical Institute campus.
"ITT Tech's commitment to early career awareness encourages students to start thinking about a future in STEM," said Marie Watson, director of the ITT Technical Institute in Durham. "This is a great opportunity for our campus to be involved in a STEM-related event that engages students in hands-on activities and mentoring."
The Saturday workshop will focus on developing games with Scratch, a collaborative learning program that allows students to program games, animation and interactive stories online. Scratch is a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.
