According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, "telecommunications firms supply an essential service to the U.S. economy."1 The communications industry offers wired, wireless and satellite services using such devices as wired phone and cable TV, as well as cellular phone, broadband and mobile Internet, and satellite TV, among others.
Fast data transmission is used by many businesses, households and individuals. The industry continues to evolve. The United States is the world's largest broadband market, with more than 83.3 million fixed (wired) broadband subscriptions and 136.6 million wireless broadband subscriptions.2
The demand for communication devices has created a need for people with skills to develop, install, test and maintain them. These professionals work for data and telecommunications service providers, TV and satellite services organizations, computer network sales and services organizations, electronic systems R&D facilities, and entertainment industries.
The Electronics and Communications Engineering Technology program in the School of Electronics Technology at ITT Technical Institute emphasizes technical skills that can be used to help develop, install, test and maintain communications systems. The curriculum includes subjects related to wired and wireless communication with complementary topics in mathematics. Courses emphasize the technical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Graduates of this program may begin to pursue career opportunities in a variety of entry-level positions, such as electronics engineering technologist, electronics engineering assistant, engineering sales/service representative, computer systems technologist, technical consultant, telecommunications technician, communication systems installer, field service representative, engineering technician or research technician.
